The
three-hour fair showcases an array of health-giving therapies
ranging from Shiatsu and LaStone massage to acupuncture, foot reflexology,
facials and pedicures. Information
booths provide samples of homeopathic remedies, locally made herbal oils and
healthy treats that taste good. Shop owners and professional staff are
on hand to talk about special diets and holistic treatment for pets. There are
demonstrations as well as diagnostic tests from War Memorial Hospital. Door prizes,
including massages and other treatments, and health and beauty products are given
away every half hour.
Two new treatments are scheduled to be introduced at the 2007 Spa Feast, both
by the popular Atasia Spa. The first is the new wash and scrub using pomegranate
butter which launches a series of seasonal flavored scrubs. Atasia staff also
plan a half hour demonstration of the Lomi Lomi sacred Hawaiian massage at 12:30pm.
With the massage therapist using long strokes of the underside of the forearm,
Lomi Lomi is as fluid and sensual as the Hawaiian background music that times
the treatment. Lomi Lomi differs from traditional massage in that a single point
on the body is not receiving pressure and release; an entire segment of back
or shoulder or stomach is stroked into new energy alignment. The only difficulty
for the lucky person who becomes the body on which Lomi Lomi is demonstrated
at the Spa Feast is that they cannot rush off and schedule a full 90 minute massage
for later. The rule is that no one should have more than one Lomi Lomi treatment
in a day. Who can predict what too much bliss would do?
Spa Feast expands beyond the Saturday morning fair to a weekend of special spa-related
activities including spa treatment packages, healthy specials at local restaurants
and sale prices on spa and health items at several downtown shops. Seekers of
health and stress relief are urged to experience in-depth versions of the samples
at the spa fair and plan a two-day adventure picking and choosing among the town's
four full-service spas and collection of individual practitioners including four
acupuncturists.
For more than 250 years, visitors to the area have followed in the path of Native
Americans who soaked in the warm mineral waters from time immemorial. George
Washington was the beginning of a parade of notables that made Berkeley Springs
the destination of choice during a series of spa Golden Ages. Historic
visitors would be astonished at the range of treatments -- and the facilities
that house them -- now sharing center stage with traditional soaks in the warm
mineral springs that still flow unabated in the center of town. Sporting a population
of three times as many massage therapists as lawyers, Berkeley Springs easily
translates its history as America1s first spa into its future as the premier
spa town of the 21st century.
