BERKELEY SPRINGS NAMED GREAT PLACE TO RETIRE

BERKELEY SPRINGS, WV ---- The latest edition of America's 100 Best Places to Retire not only includes Berkeley Springs in that august list, but singles out the small West Virginia town as one of the top 10 art towns for retirement.
" Being a hot retirement choice is an economic boom for Berkeley Springs," said Jeanne Mozier, an active promoter of the area. "Retirees and those soon to be retired build houses, support local businesses and lend their often considerable talents and resources to local civic organizations." Mozier is confident that this rating in a nationally distributed book lends credibility to what many in Berkeley Springs already know. "This is the place to be," she said.

According to the publisher, the book covers topics that are important to today’s retirees, from population figures and climate information to tax rates, housing costs and health care options. Beyond facts and figures, the community profiles uncover the character of each locale. Candid interviews with relocated retirees from each community are featured in the book giving a straightforward and engaging look at why people choose a particular place.

" Outstanding views, great restaurants and shopping, and arts activities at the Ice House are all reasons people come to Berkeley Springs to retire," agreed Roger Salen, President of MDG Companies of West Virginia. "More than 98% of our 225 lots sold in Cacapon South and Cacapon East were sold to retirees or those soon-to-be retired," said Salen.

" Collectively, they spend millions of dollars in the area."
Berkeley Springs is also listed as one of the top 10 mountain towns recognizing those views that Salen markets. The only other West Virginia town included on the list is Shepherdstown which rates as both top 10 undiscovered and top 10 college town.

The book is currently available from Vacation Publications or online. For more information on Berkeley Springs, visit www.berkeleysprings.com or call 1-800-447-8797. BERKELEY SPRINGS NAMED GREAT PLACE TO RETIRE

The July/August issue of Blue Rudge Country magazine featured an article entitled Blue Ridge Mountain Retirement: Pick a Pretty Town by D. Gail Fleenor. A total of 24 places in the eight state region were selected and included in a chart.

In addition to Berkeley Springs, nearby communities highlighted were Cumberland and Hagerstown, Maryland; and Charles Town, WV.

After a general introduction, the three-page article that accompanied the chart was devoted entirely to describing Berkeley Springs. Mentioned in the article as reasons for retiring to Berkeley Springs were an active retirement community and senior life services center. Fleenor also noted the presence of good health care, including some alternative-care options such as five full-service spas and a homeopathic medical center.

She described the classic downtown, and emphasized the active arts aspect of the area. Outdoor recreation including the golf course at Cacapon State Park was also mentioned as was its convenient location close to Washington and Baltimore. The entry on the composite chart of all 24 selected locations describes Berkeley Springs as one of America's most liveable towns and villages because of its affordable housing, uncrowded town and varied outdoor recreational activities.

This recognition joins others including Travel 50 and Beyond's naming Berkeley Springs among "Ten Great Places to Retire," and the Wall Stree Journal's mention of Berkeley Springs in "Second Homes for the Rest of Us." Information was provided by Travel Berkeley Springs to Fleenor on her request. There are a lot of similarities between an area that appeals to tourists and one that appeals to retirees, said Jeanne Mozier who handles press relations for the travel council.
