SPRINGS NAMED GREAT PLACE TO RETIRE
The July/August issue of Blue Rudge Country magazine featured an article entitled Blue Ridge Mountain Retirement: Pick a Pretty Town by D. Gail Fleenor. A total of 24 places in the eight state region were selected and included in a chart. In addition to Berkeley Springs, nearby communities highlighted were Cumberland and Hagerstown, Maryland; and Charles Town, WV. After a general introduction, the three-page article that accompanied the chart was devoted entirely to describing Berkeley Springs. Mentioned in the article as reasons for retiring to Berkeley Springs were an active retirement community and senior life services center. Fleenor also noted the presence of good health care, including some alternative-care options such as five full-service spas and a homeopathic medical center. She described the classic downtown, and emphasized the active arts aspect of the area. Outdoor recreation including the golf course at Cacapon State Park was also mentioned as was its convenient location close to Washington and Baltimore. The entry on the composite chart of all 24 selected locations describes Berkeley Springs as one of America's most liveable towns and villages because of its affordable housing, uncrowded town and varied outdoor recreational activities. This recognition joins others including Travel 50 and Beyond's naming Berkeley Springs among "Ten Great Places to Retire," and the Wall Stree Journal's mention of Berkeley Springs in "Second Homes for the Rest of Us." Information was provided by Travel Berkeley Springs to Fleenor on her request. There are a lot of similarities between an area that appeals to tourists and one that appeals to retirees, said Jeanne Mozier who handles press relations for the travel council.
