The culture of health which arose in the mid-18th century as colonial travelers followed native tribes to the warm mineral springs, has been a mainstay of the area's economy and continues so today more than ever. In addition to the waters themselves, a health industry exists that includes five full service spas, more than 40 bodyworkers using a myriad of techniques, and a manufacturing and retail outlet for homeopathic medical remedies.
Although the area surrounding Berkeley Springs has been serving visitors for more than two centuries it remains relatively undisturbed with pristine natural areas and thousands of acres in state parks. There is wilderness abounding yet accessible for first-hand observation of nature.
The natural system is readily observed through hiking, biking or driving along lightly trafficked country roads. Working farms and woodlots illustrate the relationship of people to their land.
In recent years, "green" tourism has gone beyond simple nature walks. On these pages you will find lists of local businesses that practice ecologically sound measures ranging from recycling to vegetarian cooking, and local groups that encourage participation from visitors in protecting the environment. Click on each season to find ever-changing environmentally-related activities then use our lists to explore and find favorite birds, ferns, wildflowers, trees and more.
